June 2016 EVENTS

Training:  Competency Trials and Litigation

***NEW DATE***  June 8, 2016
Time:  5:30-7:00 p.m.
Where:  Alameda County Public Defender's Office
Address:  1401 Lakeside Dr. 3rd Floor Library, Oakland, CA

Join AACTLA and Brian Bloom, Assistant Public Defender, Alameda County Public Defender's Office in an informative training about litigating issues surrounding competency and 1368 procedures on June 8, 2016 at the Alameda County Public Defender's Office, located at 1401 Lakeside Dr. 3rd Floor Library, Oakland, CA, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

With the scant resources available to clients for their mental health needs, the sad reality is that many of them are arrested and charged with crimes.  Criminal defense attorneys must be prepared to confront this practice with litigation and advocacy... and this training will show you how!  The rules of criminal procedure do not necessarily apply in this little known area of the law - we will present the basics of litigating a competency trial, as well as discuss how such a trial fits in to the overall strategy of a case.

David Klaus, Assistant Public Defender, Alameda County Public Defender's Office, who recently litigated the much publicized competency trial of One Goh, the defendant charged with the 2012 shooting at Oikos University in Oakland, will share his experience and the ways in which culture played a role in looking at the competency issue of his Korean American client.

Please RSVP with Heather Chang: heather.chang@gmail.com by May 23rd.  1.5 hours of MCLE will be provided.
